In vielen Ländern Europas und auch in den USA werden Vornamen und gelegentlich auch Geschlechtsnamen zu Spitz- oder Kosenamen verkürzt. In den USA ist die Methode fast institutionalisiert worden. William ist Bill und wer ihm näher steht, nennt ihn Billy. Robert ist Bob und auch hier gibt es eine intimere Form, Bobby.
